Predicting the September 2019 Nintendo Direct

Save State: Game On Sep 04, 2019

Tonight at 6:00 PM Eastern Time, many Nintendo fans will be gathering around their televisions, computers, and phones to see what the company has in store. Sure, it’s basically a giant infomercial, but it’s a ton of fun, and there’s likely to be at least one shocker.

So, what’s going to be there?

Here are my guesses. They're entirely based on gut instinct, as all predictions should be.

Luigi’s Mansion 3 Showcase
Minutes 1–10
This is confirmed to be included, and I think that it would make sense as an opener. We’ll get a feature rundown, as well as a look at some new mechanics and the final presentation.

The Legend of Zelda: Link’s Awakening Final Trailer/Showcase
Minutes 11–13
A two-minute trailer/showcase of The Legend of Zelda: Link’s Awakening is likely to be there somewhere, and since it’s releasing very soon, it’s a good bet to be included early.

Pokémon Sword/Shield Showcase
Minutes 14–23
A two-minute trailer/showcase of The Legend of Zelda: Link’s Awakening is likely to be there somewhere, and since it’s releasing very soon, it’s a good bet to be included early. Like Luigi’s Mansion, Pokémon is already confirmed as a headliner, so expect a significant amount of time to be spent trying to convince the #BringBackNationalDex folks to buy the title.

Trailer Showcase
Minutes 24–26
There’s likely to be a couple of these, and I suspect there will be more than three in a rapid-fire block, but let’s keep it simple here: River City Girls, Yooka-Laylee and the Impossible Lair, Witcher III Complete Edition.

Banjo-Kazooie Release Date for Smash Ultimate
Minutes 27–29
When you get over the halfway point, you need a big announcement to revitalize fans. This feels like the Direct where we get info on Banjo’s inclusion in Smash.

Trailer Showcase
Minutes 30–33
One more of these, I think. I stacked this one more in my Twitter post, but they also could even out between the two. We should be seeing TOWN, the new IP from Game Freak, DAEMON X MACHINA, Star Wars Pinball, New Super Lucky’s Tale, Ni No Kuni, Mario Kart Tour, and Ori and the Blind Forest.

Smash Ultimate: New Challenger Pack
Minutes 34–38
Yeah, it’s been only a few minutes since the Banjo reveal, but this has also popped up recently as a rumour/leak, so it seems like a lock. It’s perfect to drop this here, right before the signature “one more thing.”

One More Thing
Minutes 39–40
It’s a bit foolish to guess this one, since it’s almost definitely something that’s been completely locked away from the public eye, but if I had to make a hail mary guess, I’d have to say that a Mario teaser would make the most sense. If there’s ever going to be an F-Zero sequel, this would be a great year to do that as well.

Not Going to Be There, A Prediction
It’s too soon to see anything from Animal Crossing: New Horizons. We got gameplay, a release date, and a great trailer at E3. People don’t need reminding that it exists…Metroid Prime Trilogy seems more like a hope than a slam-dunk showing, and Prime 4 seems too early in development…That Breath of the Wild sequel is a very unlikely hope…Overwatch may be heading to Switch, but it won’t be the big announcement for a Direct.
