NBA 2K20 MyTeam Trailer Brags About The Inclusion of a Slot Machine

Save State: Game On Aug 29, 2019

Take-Two Interactive, owners of NBA 2K, Grand Theft Auto, and Red Dead Redemption among other properties, is no stranger to allowing gambling in their games.

There’s a casino in Grand Theft Auto V, where you can put real money into the game and gamble for, you guessed it, virtual prizes. In NBA 2K18, there was a controversy where you had to pay to change your haircut in the game. There wasn’t even a preview of what it would look like.

In an era where consumers are so aware of gambling in video games, through concern over loot boxes and more, Take-Two is at it again.

This year’s flagship basketball title, NBA 2K20, will include a lot of new features in their “MyTeam” mode, a mode that’s always been absolutely infested with microtransactions.

This year, though, the 2K team is including gambling elements that are, shall we say, less subtle.

Yes, that’s a pinball-style machine. And yes, at the top of this page there’s a slot machine.

In the comments of the YouTube upload from 2K United Kingdom, fans weren’t impressed.

The last comment, referring to “acting,” is referring to 2K including popular sports YouTubers in the trailer. Previews of NBA 2K20 have been popping up around YouTube, many with the disclaimer that the video was “sponsored by NBA 2K20.”

Less than a decade ago, this would have looked more like a mobile release than a home console release, but sports games have largely moved in this direction since the switch to current-gen console hardware.

NBA 2K20 releases on September 6, 2019 for PC, Nintendo Switch, PlayStation 4, Xbox One, and iOS.
